The edge of Madeira New Year's celebrations is the fantastic fireworks show in Funchal amphitheatre. Already a world's guiness record this show is one of the greatest attractions to Madeira Island as a tourism destination. This year the regional government will spend 1.2 million euros on the New Year's fireworks show.

5 cruise ships are already confirmed to spend the New Years Fireworks in Madeira sea where the show is best contemplated. Hotels usually get full and around midnight, on the 31st of December Funchal bay gets crowded with small twinkling lights as many boats go out to enjoy the fantastic fireworks and begin a new year with a celebration spirit.

35 Years later Madeira is again connected by sea with mainland Portugal. This time by a Spanish ferryboat which links Tenerife to Madeira and to Portimão, in Algarve. It started to operate this weekend, June 14th, leaving Madeira on Saturday morning, around 10:30 am and arriving to Algarve 21 hours later. Volcán de Tijarafe, the ferryboat from Naviera Armas, which links Algarve to Madeira and Tenerife Islands, leaves from Portimão on Sundays at mid-day. This operation will be held all weekends until middle September 2008 and it is predictable to return on June 2009.

Madeira Flower Festival 2008

Due to heavy rain the flower festival parade which was supposed to happen today (Sunday) afternoon, was postponed for tomorrow (Monday) at 2pm. Saturday's program went well with school children fulfilling the "Wall of Hope" each one with a different flower. On Funchal downtown the fower perfume stands in the air as there are flower carpets covering some sidewalks, there is a flower exhibition and some other flower decorations on the main squares of the city.

In 29 years this is the second time the flower festival had to be postponed due to bad weather conditons with the first time being in 1983. Weather forecasts are predicting rain until Wednesday but we hope tomorrow afternoon rain will give us a break....
