As the Iceland's volcanic ash cloud moves to the south, Madeira and Porto Santo airports are now closed due to it. So far there has been canceled 94 flights, from which 58 are national (Lisbon, Oporto, Ponta Delgada and Porto Santo) and 36 are international (UK, France; Belgium, Holland, Ireland and Switzerland). This means 11 thousand passengers affected since 00:00 of the 8th of May 2010 and until 6:00 pm of the 10th May 2010. Though the ash cloud is still moving south the forecast until the 12th May 2010 at 00:00 shows Madeira still under the effect of it but more official news will be given at 18:00 of the 11th May 2010. Due to the last week's stormy weather, with strong winds and heavy rain there has been some landslides and rockfalls and so Madeira government had to close some of Madeira roads and levadas for security reasons. These are some of the recommended paths/levadas (PR) that are closed until further notice:
The regional road ER 103 between Sitio do Cabouco and Sitio da Fajã do Cedro Gordo, in São Roque do Faial, Santana will be closed until the 12th of January 2010. The footpath that links Levada da Calheta with Ponta do Pargo, between the Water Treatment Station of Estreito da Calheta and the industrial estate in Atalhinho will be closed for maintenance until 15th March 2010. Be careful not to risk in levada walks or trekking, if there is a landfall do not continue over it, it is always safer to come back. |
