"Once you have been here, you will want to return and will wonder why you ever wanted to stay anywhere else on Madeira. We’re about to visit again having been a number of times since the Quinta opened as a hotel in 2000. Elegant country house style and surroundings where you are treated as a house guest. 40 or so well-equipped, spacious rooms in modern building overlooking six acres of peaceful botanical gardens; main public areas of hotel, bar, breakfast and dining rooms in the old house – wonderful to be able to have breakfast outside on the breakfast terrace. Superlative service from charmingly efficient staff. Standard of catering to match anything else in Madeira.
Hotel situated on a hill about 1 mile out of the centre of Funchal with extensive views both out to sea and towards the mountains – well clear of the hotel zone. Good walk downhill into town. You might want to get the hotel minibus or a taxi back! Good range of well-maintained leisure facilities within the grounds including a pool-side bar/bistro for lunch drinks etc. Don't forget to say hello to ‘Colombo’ the Quinta's longest-serving resident - a giant Galapagos tortoise.
Why no other reports to date about this hotel? Is everyone trying to keep the secret to themselves?"

Spent long weekend at Jardins do Lago. Delightful place, with outstanding gardens, spacious accommodation and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Staff are to be congratulated on their unobtrusive efficiency. Weather not too great, but we still managed a couple of afternoons relaxing by the pool - excellent pool-side bistro serving lunches and snacks etc - and had breakfast on terrace each morning. Hotel slightly out of town up steep hill, but courtesy bus is run several times a day into town, if you don't want to walk (NB parking somthing of a nightmare in Funchal if you hire a car). Went on most of the usual trips around Funchal (Cable car to Monte, Botanical gardens - with a new cable car, Blandy wine lodge, Reid's for tea etc)

Returned to Jardins do Lago for New Year festivities. Stayed only a few nights but thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and wonderful weather. Delicious New Year's Eve gala dinner rounded off by the pool and terrace, drinking champagne and enjoying the extraordinary fireworks. Must book for this coming New Year.

We stayed here for two weeks having wanted a small quality hotel with a bit of character. The Jardins do Lago did not dissapoint. From the moment we stepped through the entrance doors we were made to feel welcome. The very helpful staff could not do enough for you at any time of the day or night. The gardens were being refurbished during our stay and the ground floor rooms were not being used so that nobody was disturbed. This meant that the Hotel was only about half full and made it all the more relaxing. This beautiful hotel is situated on one of the hills of Funchal and the original house was built in the 18th Century. When converted into a hotel the majority of the rooms are in the new wing on three levels overlooking the gardens and south facing mainly to the sea. Only the suites and the main reception rooms are located in the main building. The gardens have a vast variety of plants and old rare trees covering an area of 2.5 hectares (6.2 acres). The lake has two swans (probably more now because the female had eggs that were due to hatch shortly after we left) and many fish, which we enjoyed feeding after breakfast with left over toast. Colombo the giant tortoise has lived in his little patch of grass for over 45 years and was always at the edge by the path on a morning to welcome guests, welcomed any fruit presented to him and loved being stroked on top of his head. The large semi covered swimming pool together with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, gymnasium and bar made it like paradise to relax in. You only have to look in the guest book on reception and see the comments made regarding the helpfullness of the staff to see that everyone was highly delighted with their stay. We will definately be back at some point to this beautiful Island and its friendly people and this lovely property.
