Choupana Hills Resort and Spa

Hotel
Choupana Hills is a luxurious Resort & Spa nestled on the verdant hillside of Funchal. The development of this project has been inspired by the French architect Michel de Camaret co-jointly with architect-decorator Didier Lefort who designed and decorated the famous Meridien Bora Bora and The Datai in Malaysia.
The main features of the buildings are wood and stone, comprised of 34 bungalow-style units built on pillars. Some African and Asian influences can be noticed in the unique decoration of this boutique hotel as well as in other antique pieces sourced from various Portuguese discoveries. The 58 Deluxe rooms and 4 Suites have spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and the bay of Funchal or the lush tropical gardens. In the two main buildings you will find facilities such as the reception, restaurant, bars, Spa, lounge, library and conference facilities.

Choupana Hills is very proud of its Health and Beauty Spa which exceeds the most demanding of expectations. Treatments for both the body and mind are offered in a serene and relaxed atmosphere.
We offer Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Rasul (exfoliation), algae wraps, facial treatments, Hot Stone therapy, Shiatsu an authentic Turkish Steam bath (Hammam) and a Sauna. A perfect fusion of rigour and imagination. Two heated swimming pools; an outdoor lagoon swimming pool and an indoor pool with jet massage and Jacuzzi effect. A conference room (60 m2) with a capacity for approximately 35 people in a school type set-up is located in the main building. A courtesy bus service is available to and from the centre of Funchal several times per day

The spacious Guest rooms, Deluxe rooms (40 m2) and Suites (50 m2), are decorated in a contemporary style with an exotic touch. All rooms have large verandas - 27 m2 for double rooms and 31 m2 for the suites – with views of the bay of Funchal/Atlantic Ocean or the sub-tropical gardens. Bathroom with separate WC, hair dryer, mini bar, personal safe, television and Internet access. The Suites are also equipped with a heated outdoor Jacuzzi, DVD and Hi-fi system.

The Xôpana Restaurant offers its guests exciting, exotic and innovative “fusion” cuisine. In the Basalt Bar, cocktails, drinks and snacks are served throughout the course of the day. Whilst enjoying your day at the pool or SPA, try our isotonic drinks at our Pool Bar. “High afternoon tea” is a must and is served in the Lounge.

"Fantastic Food
Loved Choupana Hills, the hotel itself was a dream - superb food, excellent wine list and top-notch facilities and found all the staff to be helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Waking up with sunlight pouring through the huge bedroom windows and the city coming to life below was unforgettable. Madeira is just the right mixture of traditional city and up and coming food destination".

"What a team!
From the greeting on arrival at reception - where we were immediately offered a refreshing non-alcoholic drink - to our departure 7 days later seen off by the General Manager M Philippe Moreau and the reception staff, the level and quality of service exceeded anything we have experienced in 40 years of travel. M Philippe has built and trained a young international team who deliver - always with a smile, and they mean it! The hotel itself is strikingly modern in design, the spacious and well equipped bungalow rooms are staggered down the hillside, but if you can't manage the steps a buggy whisks you up to the main buildings which include the bar, restaurant, and excellent spa facilities. At 600 metres above the sea there is bound to be occasional cloud/mist in the early months of the year, but the courtesy bus runs you down to the sunshine in Funchal in 10 minutes. The hotel's Xoupana restaurant food has something for everyone, from 'healthy options', through traditional Portuguese dishes to 'fusion' cuisine based on local produce. The strictly Madeiran/Portuguese wine list was an 'education'. We'll be back!"

"It just gets better
Every time we go to Choupana Hills. We returned in October after our immensely enjoyable stay in June (see previous review). Some may think us unadventurous but the place is so good we had to go back! If anything the service standards and food had improved the staff knew our little preferences and accommodated them. Whilst the weather was not all we wished for it did somehow mean we had to be more creative in our trips out and about. The spa and gym got some serious use this time and whilst the gym is basic it is sufficiently equipped to get a good sweat going to work off a few calories (I guarantee you will put on weight and not mind it at all). If you are (or feel you are) seriously rich then the suite / bungalows might be worth a try but I think the privacy they afford (except the outdoor Jacuzzi bath) is not worth the limited views across the bay over Funchal".
