Madeira Firecrest

Madeira Birds

Regulus ignicapillus madeirensis (Hartcourt 1851) is an indigenous sub-specie from Madeira Archipelago, unmistakable by its restless behavior and its fire-colored crest.

It is the smallest bird of the Madeira avifauna and occurs in many different habitats, from the indigenous to the exotic forests, in humanized rural areas, in agricultural areas, although it is more common to find it in high altitude areas where the heather is the predominant plant.

The locally called Bis-bis is considered to be an occasional nesting bird in Porto Santo Island and its general population, with up to 10 000 individuals, presents a positive evolution with no threatenings against it.
