If you are a citizen member of the European Union:

If you are going to stay in Portugal less than three months a permit of residence is not necessary, so to enter Portuguese territory you just need your identity card or a valid passport.

Beyond three months of stay, all citizens of a Member State of the European Union are required to fill in some formalities. You must register in a regional delegation of the Emigration Services in the country where you live, for a residence permit.

Documents required, for the request of the residence permit:
- Your identity card or your passport (valid) and photocopies.
- Two photographs of identity.

If you are not a citizen member of the European Union:
According to your nationality, a visa of entry can be required. To know if you need a visa to get in Portugal you should contact your country consulate in Portugal.
